Tips for Choosing a Calla Lily Arrangement

Check out some calla lily bouquet options before you settle for those roses or gerbera daisies. Callas are more than just serviceable flowers. Callas are structurally elegant, with long stems and a simple but distinctive curve as part of its trumpet shape. This gives callas movement and a simplicity that works great with greenery or decorated with other flowers. When you using callas in a bouquet arrangement, pay attention to these tips and tricks.

Calla Lily Bouquet Basics

Calla lilies are available in two sizes, standard and mini. Standard callas can have flowers that are five inches or more across where minis are much smaller. Standard callas are available in white, cream and a faint green, where minis come in a rainbow assortment from yellow to deep purple.

Tips for Calla Lily Arrangements
When planning an arrangement that includes calla lilies, be sure to change the water often and use tepid, not cold, water. Calla lilies are deep drinkers and don't tolerate going dry. Flowers fade more quickly when bacteria is introduced to the water, so clean vases with a weak bleach solution and make sure to use distilled water in arrangements. Distilled water also keeps bubble formation to a minimum. Bubbles block flower stems, making it impossible for them to rehydrate.

When creating arrangements, plan on using thirty standard callas or forty mini callas in a centerpiece. Position callas a little higher than the other flowers in your arrangement. When staging or displaying flowers, be sure to keep them away from drafts and heat sources like televisions, air vents and windows.

Flexible Calla Lilies
Mini callas work very well in bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres too. This makes them a good choice for wedding arrangements. Weddings where bridesmaid bouquets are different colors lend themselves well to the use of mini callas because they're available in so many different shades. Callas can be sold by size, color and stem length. Because the length is important when costing and planning arrangements, know what you'll need before you buy. When in doubt, a simple arrangement of standard, white callas, red roses, ferns, and baby's breath in a tall crystal vase makes a dramatic display that always a show stopper.

If you're buying a calla lily bouquet, remember that standard lilies will be much larger than mini varieties and may overpower simple poseys or other small arrangements. For the best results, if you haven't worked with this flexible flower before, consult your florist for recommendations. suite101
